Ah….again another example of how you can also apply principles of running to life!
When it comes to my running I usually don’t have trouble at least getting the run in, it may not be the planned workout, but I usually get some form of running in. When it comes to the stretching, strength training and form drills…I usually have an excuse. I tend to look at anything more than my run as extra, so if I have extra time (and who really has that) then I will do it. The only time I am really good about stretching is when I feel an injury coming. The truth is that the stretching, the strength training and the form drills are important and will make me a better runner.
What it comes down to is you have time for what you make time for. How many times do you hear someone say “I didn’t have time”…. I am sure I have been guilty. But if we were to actually go back and review the day I am sure if it was a priority for us we could have made time. It is amazing how there is always time for the things that we really want to do :)!
So I have added this circuit to my routine and I aim to do it 3 days a week….today will be my third time doing it this week. I did make a few adjusts to it though. I added 15 right and lest arm tricep kickbacks (do this using whatever weight you are comfortable with), and I also took out the jumping jacks (because I hate doing jumping jacks) and added a 90 second plank instead. As I get better at the plank I will increase the time but right now 90 seconds is quite hard for me. If you have never done a plank I would start with 30 seconds. I like this because it is short but challenging.
While I know that there are so many things you can add and do more of to improve your running, I am also being careful to be realistic. I am not a professional runner (not even close). I really enjoy running. I love that it gives me more energy, I love the example it sets for my kids, I love the challenge of racing and trying to improve my times….but I also have a lot of things that are more important to me than running. So…..I will do what I can with the time I give it. If I am not able to make time for strength or if I have to cut my short or change my planned workout then that is ok.
Did you catch this article from Lauren Fleshman on How to Injure Yourself? It is great. I have definitely been guilty of a couple of these :)!
