Let the training begin! Starting with some speed…

race2

Does everyone get this excited or is it just me? :)! I am super excited to be officially training for my next 1/2 marathon!!! T-5 weeks and counting! I am doing one in the fall, but I wanted to try to find one more this spring/summer. I really wanted to run THIS RACE, but it just seemed a little pricey to me. Everything else about it seemed great..it is close, good timing, just looks fun. So I did what any smart runner would do…I asked for it as an early birthday present! (races make awesome gifts)!Β  :)…thanks Mel! So Zooma it is and I am excited!

I spent a little bit of time yesterday looking up some tempo and speed run ideas and tried to get a better idea of what my pacing should be.

I am going to try making a few adjustments to some of my speed work and see what happens. First I am going to do more of my longer speed/ tempo intervals on the road and not on the track. (I started that today).

Second I am going to try changing my recovery from walking to active jog recovery (I did not do that today).

Lastly I really want to work on fast finishes….this is just REALLY hard for me!

Those are just a couple of things I am going to try implementing and see how it goes.

I went ahead and jumped right in today with tempo interval speed work.

*I am just going to add that I found this awesome base layer at Gap Fit and I love it. I have been looking for a good base layer for a while and this one is great…I am still looking for one that is a little lighter than this, but this one is nice to have! (especially with a 50% off code)

For my tempo intervals I did 3 miles, 3 minute recovery, 2 miles, 2 minute recovery, 1 mile, 1 minute recovery. I was aiming for goal marathon pace (6:51). I did these on the road and my splits were: 6:40, 6:47, 6:35…6:40, 6:44…6:45…(6:42 average).

I walked my recovery this time. I also did 1.5 mile warm up and cool down. Overall….I was really happy with this. I almost chickened out and did it on the track just because that is easier for me and I know more what to expect…but I am glad I didn’t!

Now I just want to find a trail to do some of my longer runs on :).

I am looking forward to a great weekend….We are having friends over for dinner tomorrow and church on Sunday…. should be a great weekend!!!! I just heard that Shalane is in DC at the Nike woman’s half and we are so close…I was almost tempted to go…but I’m not.

Are you training for anything?

Do you do your long runs on trails or roads?

Any fun weekend plans…..who’s racing?

Great news!!! YES, I get just as excited when I register for races – it’s so exciting!
I just did a great speed ladder type workout that you may like:
10 min easy, 15 min hard, 5 min all out – repeat. If you do it twice, you’ll get about 8 miles in. Those last 5 minutes are brutal…especially the second time around!

This is my first time stopping by your blog.
I wanted to run ZOOMA Annoplis but was having ITBS issues and didn’t register. I’m running a 1/2 marathon on May 18th but plan to run for fun, no time goal πŸ™‚
    Have a great weekend!

I’m sorry about your IT band! Do you live close to Annapolis? I am so excited!!!! Have you run the ZOOMA Annapolis before? It looks like a beautiful course. Good luck on your half on the 18th…no pressure races are fun πŸ™‚
      Enjoy the weekend!

Hi Emily!!!! So glad you stopped by!!!! It can be hard to get motivated to do speed work, but I always try to think of how good I feel when I am done…I also usually give myself an out (like just start and if you can’t finish you don’t have to) …but I almost always end up finishing πŸ™‚
